Netflix has confirmed Black Mirror season five is now going ahead.

Charlie Brooker is now busy working on the new episodes.

Black Mirror was confirmed earlier this year, sending fan into meltdown.

The show’s official Twitter account announced the news in typical Black Mirror style, the account shared a cryptic video and the caption: “The future will be brighter than ever.”As the video came to an end the words: “Be Right Back” flashed onto the screen.

The caption referenced an episode in season two but also heralding the show’s return.

On top of that, Netflix announced in a release: “Patience is a virtue, but rest easy knowing there is more Black Mirror on the way.”

Netflix hasn’t confirmed a release date as yet for season five but it looks like fans have a bit of a wait on their hands.

While fans might be waiting, a book called Inside Black Mirror is set to be released in November.

A description on publisher Penguin’s site reads: “This first official book logs the entire Black Mirror journey, from its origins in creator Charlie Brooker’s mind to its current status as one of the biggest cult TV shows to emerge from the UK.

“Alongside a collection of astonishing behind-the-scenes imagery and ephemera, Brooker and producer Annabel Jones will detail the creative genesis, inspiration and thought process behind each film for the first time, while key actors, directors and other creative talents relive their own involvement.”
Previously, it was announced that there would be a collection of short stories but that’s now been shelved.

Production has now started in Black Mirror after a set was built in Croydon, South London with Eighties-style shopfronts.

The show is filmed in various locations and Croydon is going to be just one of the many settings for the show.

Creator Charlie Brooker re-tweeted the post, hinting that the show would be back soon.

The Netflix renewal shouldn’t come as a surprise given the reception from fans and critics alike when season four dropped in December 2017.

Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones, who serve as producers on Black Mirror, have talked about the possibility of a season five.

In a recent interview with the Metro they teased: “We would love to do it. We’re focusing on series four at the moment.”

The pair told that there would be a “discussion” about the future of Black Mirror once season four was released, which looks like about now.

Brooker previously admitted that there were fears Black Mirror could end after the season four finale Black Museum, which confirmed that the universe was linked.

However, season five is happening and it looks likely to air at the end of 2018 at the earliest, judging by the previous release dates.

Season three was released on Netflix on October 21, 2016 and the latest run dropped on the internet streaming platform on December 29, 2017.

There’s also a talk of a possible spin-off from season four’s story USS Callister, which served as a twisted Star Trek parody.

Toby Haynes, who directed the episode, told The Hollywood Reporter: “I’d love to do a TV series of USS Callister – it’s probably one of the best pilots for a space show ever. And I made it! So I’m keen to see it as a TV series.

“I think Charlie [Brooker] might revisit it as a Black Mirror. Whether I’m the one to do it, I don’t know.”

He also hinted that there was an idea for the villainous Captain Daly (played by Jesse Plemons) to have survived the end of the episode and could come back.

Haynes explained: “There is this brilliant idea that he is still alive, and his attempted murder gets pinned on someone. Whose fingerprints do they find in the apartment? There’s so much you could do.”

What will happen in Black Mirror season 5?

Story details are being kept under wraps but judging from the recent Black Mirror set that appeared in Croydon, fans can expect a retro instalment set in the Eighties.

Black Mirror season five will be more of the same: stories with a technological angle that usually have a bleak outlook.

Seasons one and two of Black Mirror proved to be quite dark, however the third instalment proved to be more of a mixed bag in terms of tone.

Emmy Award-winning episode San Junipero was perhaps the most hopeful and uplifting story of the series as the central protagonists got a happy ending.

While season four’s USS Callister had a happy conclusion of sorts for the crew trapped inside a computer game.

Each episode will be a self-contained story, however all episodes of Black Mirror live in a shared universe and there are subtle references between the different instalments.

How many episodes will there be of Black Mirror season 5?

The fifth cycle is likely to have 12 episodes in total after the Black Mirror season 5 announcement video featuring 12 loading screens.

Season five is likely to be the longest run in the history of the show.

Previous seasons of Black Mirror on Netflix featured six episodes.

Before Black Mirror’s move to Netflix, seasons on Channel 4 ran to just three episodes but these doubled when the show was bought over by the internet streaming giant.
