“Ibori must be celebrated because he is a man of the people not just in Delta state but across the nation, today, he is a factor in this country. On behalf of the masses of our country, we salute you, we salute your courage because you are a man who believes in the struggle of the party. You [Delta State] have a son that has built a political structure that is envied across the nation. Uche Secondus also disclosed how Ibori ensured that the present Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, emerged Governor of the State from prison.

“Before the 2015 elections, I received a call from our leader (Ibori), and I asked him the direction. He (Ibori) told me Okowa should be supported.

“I was then the Deputy National Chairman. I gathered all my people; I said I have received an order from our leader. Your Excellency, I am grateful that your decision was right. That is how we supported Dr. Okowa because the leader spoke to us” he said.

James Ibori, an alleged ‘petty thief’ who eventually became one of Nigeria’s richest men, received a 13-year jail sentence after admitting fraud of nearly £50m, described by the judge as probably “ludicrously low”.

The former governor of Delta state in Nigeria pleaded guilty in February 2012, to 10 offences relating to conspiracy to launder funds from the state, substantive counts of money laundering and one count of obtaining money transfer by deception and fraud.
