This year Wizkid drew more attention from beefs than from his music. At a point everyone kept attacking him. Some said he had become proud while others said he was disrespectful. Two of these beefs were highly publicised. The beef with Davido and Saeon, but the Starboy CEO is not moved.
Now the attention has moved from his person to the lyrics of one of the biggest songs of the year. First it was an actor who condemned it, then a writer and now Etcetera.
In truth, the song is trash like many Nigerian hit songs and Wizkid made it worse when he tried to start up a new concept with that song. Then the lyrics like they have pointed out, were out of place but this song is not alone in this category even though Wizkid could just be the biggest of them all.
Nigerians do not think of lyrics of their songs, they prefare to think about the structure, beat and melody. The industry is full of meaningless songs and if we keep blaming the artistes, solutions will never come.
We have to also condemn the AOP’s and DJ’s who play these songs and even go as far as charging outrageous sums from artistes. For us to change the trend, we need to hold these people accountable because they are the ones playing the songs.
