Nigerian Newspapers: 10 things you need to know this Sunday morning


  1. There is tension in Kano as the state Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso declared yesterday that a new Emir of Kano would be announced today. Security has been placed on red alert at various strategic places in the city of Kano to forestall any likely breakdown of law and order.

  2. Nigeria was yesterday defeated by the United States in an international friendly which held in Florida last night. Two goals from Jossy Altidore led to US’ victory. Nigeria however replied with a goal, bringing the final scores to 2:1.

  3. Former NAFDAC DG and ex-Minister of Information, Prof. Dora Akunyili yesterday passed on in an Indian hospital where she was flown to for cancer related treatment. Dora was said to have died at 10am in a specialist cancer hospital.

  4. President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday promised to develop Ekiti state if Fayose, the PDP governorship candidate in the state emerges victorious in the next gubernatorial election. Jonathan spoke on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti after Fayose received the official flag from the PDP national chairman, Alhaji Adamu Muazu.

  5. Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, has denied at a press briefing in Abuja on Saturday, that the Presidency was not part of the plan to confiscate newspapers in the country. He said the military was acting on intelligence report and not on orders from Mr. President as alleged.

  6. Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo state has said that it’s better to contract HIV/Aids than to be poor. The Governor who was speaking at the 4th retreat of the Nigeria’s Governors’ Forum in Port Harcourt was of the view that acting poor was different from being poor, and acting poor does not make one a humble leader either. He stressed on the need to remember the poor by relating with them and not by merely acting poor.

  7. Monaco left full back, Elderson Echiejile who suffered an injury in the first half of Nigeria’s friendly match against Greece has been ruled out of the World Cup. Due to the development, Ejike Uzoenyi, has been called up as his replacement.

  8. All plans are underway by the United States to set up a satellite television station in the north in order to combat insurgency. When set up, the station would be called Arewa24; report has said this morning.

  9. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Borno state has declared three days’ fasting and prayer for the abducted 250 Chibok girls and other victims of Boko Haram. The State Chairman of the Association, Titus Pona, announced this in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

  10. On entertainment scene, Davido and a few other Nigerian entertainers won big at the 2014 edition of the MTV African Music Video Awards. While Davido won the award of artist of the year and best Male artist, Flavour, Tiwa Savage, and clearance Peters were equally awarded for being outstanding in the other categories of the award they were nominated under.
