For most people, if you were sitting around watching a Friends rerun with your partner while both of you scrolled on your phones, and your partner turned to you and mumbled, “So you know how we’re getting married in a few months? I was thinking about . . . inviting both of my serious, long-term exes—that cool?,” it’d probably, uh, throw you.
But, as we already know, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are no ordinary couple, and their wedding no ordinary wedding. And according to a new report from the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden, Harry will be inviting both Chelsy Davy—whom he dated on and off for seven years—and Cressida Bonas, whom he dated for two. Harry is reported to be on good terms with both women. “Harry has stayed good friends with Chelsy and Cressida, so they will be there,” one of Harry’s friends told him. “He made sure there were no hard feelings when they split up. I don’t think Meghan will mind.”
There is actually precedence for this when it comes to royal weddings. Several of Prince William’s ex-girlfriends attended his wedding to Kate Middleton, and Camilla Parker Bowles was present for the wedding of her ex-boyfriend, Prince Charles, when he married Princess Diana. (Perhaps even stranger: Camila’s ex-husband, Andrew, attended Camilla’s later wedding to Charles.) The royal social scene is . . . not exactly typical. It’s a tight-knit club, and decorum and tradition trump any sort of sentiment when it comes to these matters.
In 2016, Davy—who was working in South Africa as a lawyer before starting a jewelry line—said in an interview that she believes she and Harry will “always be good friends.” Bonas—who has been pursuing an acting career since her split with Harry—has not commented on her current relationship with the prince.
Eden notes that Markle’s ex-husband, Trevor Engelson, is, however, unlikely to be receiving a Paperless Post save the date. He is currently developing a television show based on Markle’s relationship with Prince Harry.
