13 Persons Now Infected In Bayelsa As Monkeypox Disease Invades Rivers

It was tragedy in Bayelsa state on Monday as one of the victims of the Monkeypox viral disease, who was receiving treatment at the State quarantine centre, reportedly committed suicide.

It was gathered that the unnamed victim allegedly took his own life yesterday at an isolation centre at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, in Yenagoa Local Government Area of the state.

Confirming the development, during a press conference yesterday, the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Ebitimitula Etebu, said the deceased was among the 21 suspected cases of monkey pox that were being managed at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH).

Speaking alongside the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, the Chief Medical Director of the NDUH and other senior health officials, Etebu expressed regret that the patient took his own life despite speedily recovering from the disease ‎and stated that his medical history did not suggest any mental illness or features of depression.

The Health Commissioner further insisted that the patient did not die from the disease, adding that the police and his family have been duly informed and all due diligence will be followed to ensure the safe burial of the victim.

Mr. Etebu said that a committee had been put in place to evaluate the deceased’s clinical and social history to shed more light on the tragedy.

Meanwhile, a World Health Organization (WHO) reference laboratory in Dakar, Senegal, has confirmed the outbreak of monkeypox in Bayelsa State.

It would be recalled, blood samples from the first 13 suspected patients of the virus were dispatched to the WHO facility three weeks ago for a confirmatory test following a clinical diagnosis of monkeypox by medical doctors in Bayelsa State and officials of the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).
